Design Thinking in Action

GE Healthcare made MRIs less frightening for young children. Doug Dietz -principal designer- finally discovered that the real problem was the experience. The GE Adventure Series was born. The success rate of 80% sedation drop needed for kids to complete the MRI.

 

Discovery Phase

1. Emphaty

Any Design thinking should not begin without having a discovery activities of customer you are designing for. To learn and gain more insights, it is important for design thinkers to empathizes (Video) with the people they’re designing for to understand their needs, thoughts, emotions and motivations.

Here are the activities you can use for this phase:

  1. Define Your Audience (Persona)
  2. The Five Why’s
  3. Interview
  4. Group Interview
  5. Analogous Inspiration
  6. Expert Interview
  7. Collage
  8. Photo Journal/ Collage
  9. Create a Project Plan 

Key Take Away:

  • Gain an empathic understanding of the problem
  • Consulting experts to find out more about the area of concern
  • Understand their experiences and motivations, as well as immersing yourself in the physical environment
  • Have a deeper personal understanding of the issues involved

 

2. Define

The Define stage will help the designers in your team gather great ideas to establish features, functions, and any other elements that will allow them to solve the problems or, at the very least, allow users to resolve issues themselves with the minimum of difficulty
